Barbara Newman

Barbara - Your Cowgirl Camp Counselor!

Barbara Newman always wanted to be a cowgirl. Growing up in New York didn’t stop her. She took that can-do spirit and became a global creative director in the ad world, where she left an indelible mark on brand culture. After hearing an NPR story about the American cowgirl, Barbara was so inspired by these strong, courageous women, she left Madison Avenue and found herself in Montana, Wyoming and Texas filming a documentary about their lives. It was out West where Barbara fell in love with the natural world, the power of the landscape, and what it means to be an environmental steward. It was also where she connected with indigenous elders and their wisdom teachings, which sparked her recently published award-winning novel, The Dreamcatcher Codes, her love letter to Mother Earth and all her daughters.

An advocate for building cultural bridges and emboldening women and girls, Barbara facilitates leadership programs for schools and other organizations, and was part of the think tank that inspired the Fred Rogers Center for Children’s Media and Education. Barbara is on the Board of the Berkshire Film and Media Collaborative and is a member of NY Women in Television and Film, and Earth Alliance. She lives in the Berkshire Mountains of Western, MA, on Mohican tribal land.
